Today I turn this blog over to my girlfriend Lauren to showcase some of the photos she took on her recent trip to New York. I want to begin a regular feature where I showcase other photographer’s work so if you would like to be a part of this send me an e-mail or leave a comment and we’ll set it up.
Lauren’s Commentary:
These photos were taken during my recent trip to New York. I was in the city for three days, primarily for the purpose of interviewing with a variety of mental health sites I might work with this year during grad school. However, I was also able to spend some time walking around and absorbing the sights, sounds and people that are a part of it. My camera came out a few times during the course of the trip: one a golden afternoon in Union Square watching the break-dancers there, and another during a concert at The Bowery (Jessica Lea Mayfield headlined, and Dan Auerbach made my evening by showing up to accompany her on guitar).
There’s an interesting story behind the break-dancing photographs. While these guys reportedly come to Union Square almost every week (if not more) to dance, the little girl was visiting for the first time with her dad. After watching the dancers for approximately twenty minutes, she began to imitate their movements. Catching sight of her from the far side of the circle, one of the dancers called her into the ring. She began to perform enthusiastically, leaping for a crowd who chanted “Go, Baby!” and clapped their hands to the rhythm of the music. Eventually the girl ran back to her dad, who had been enthusiastically cheering her on, laughing the whole time. The two of them walked away into the crowd as next dancer took his turn. It intrigues me when I consider what effect this might have on her future dance career… The event was somewhat hallmark, but it warmed my heart to the city even more. I love this place.

Great photos! The little girl was the perfect subject. Looks like lots of fun happening everywhere.
I got one question… if it’s a golden afternoon, why are the photos in black and white? I wanna see the golden.
Or is golden meant more in a “stay golden, ponyboy” sort way.
I like the second to last. Has a nice feel to it.
