UGA Fall Practice – Day 1

Yesterday I was sent up to Athens to shoot UGA’s first fall practice for The Telegraph in Macon.  I’ve shot UGA practices before back when I was working at The Red & Black, but it was a bit different back then.  The last time I went my goal was to get general practice shots, this time I had a list of about 35 people I needed to get.  I wasn’t sure how much time I had so my primary goal was to get a shot of each player on my list, regardless of whether they were in action or not as I didn’t want to waste time waiting for them to actually do something.

It was a bit hectic, but I printed out an organized list of all the players I needed by the position they played to help me make sure I got as many as possible.  Unfortunately I wasn’t able to spot one of the players and two of the coaches I needed, but I was able to get everyone else, considering the size of the list I consider that a succesful mission.

Today I head to Georgia Tech to do the same at their practice.

Anyways, here are some of the photos from today that I liked, even if they are overwhelming unspectacular.

Caleb King will need to step up his game if he wants to keep his #1 spot on the depth chart, replacing Knowshon Moreno.  Georgia has at least four running backs who will be looking for playing time this fall.

Brandon Bogotay transferred this year from a junior college in California.

Joe Cox will get his turn to lead the team after 4 years of playing behind D.J. Shockley, Joe Tereshinski and Matthew Stafford.  Cox went undefeated during his career as a quarterback at Independence High School in Charlotte, N.C.

A.J. Green is looking to improve on his SEC leading stats from last year.  He came just shy of 1,000 receiving yards.

Head Coach Mark Richt is hoping to bounce back from a “disappointing” 10-3 season.  In Georgia, disappointing is a relative term as Georgia Tech fans were ecstatic to go 9-4.

Trinton Sturdivant as well as many other Georgia players are looking forward to the season after sitting out last year due to injuries.  As a result of the injuries, more players have significant starting time taking one of last year’s biggest weaknesses and turning it into a major plus.

Blair Walsh, a scholarship kicker, will need to improve his kicking if he wants to ward off Brandon Bogotay.  Walsh was criticized for missing several field goal attempts that previous kicker Brandon Coutu would have made while also failing to get the ball into the end-zone during kickoffs.

  1. You might think they are unspectacular, but the fans in general really love to see these.
