Focus the Nation – James Porter

I shot a lecture yesterday for the Banner-Herald, it was definitely a throwback to the last few semesters when I worked for The Red & Black.  It’d been awhile since I’d shot any non-sporting event on campus.

The lighting for this lecture was terrible.  There were almost no stage lights, there may have actually been none now that I think about it, and there were 3 bright, giant screens behind him and to both sides.  So I had to figure out ways to bounce my flash to illuminate him, not blow out the screen, and not cast his shadow.  In addition to all this there were very few clear shots of him on stage because of a podium and table that were up there blocking him for most of the speech.

I got this one at the tail end while he was answering questions from the crowd.

  1. I suppose I am one of the many who haven’t realized the obstacles that have to be overcome in the practice of photography.

You have made me more aware of the details in photographs and the need for achievement of the science of photography.

I now look at photographs with a different perspective.
