Ch(y)ess

I shot these photos on a trip to Macon. I had just gotten lunch with The Telegraph’s photo editor, Woody Marshall, when we spotted this man sitting by this chess set out next to the road. We pulled over and shot a bit.

Sadly, I only had my 50mm f/1.8 with me at the time so I had to think of new ways to get the photos I wanted. I think I did pretty decently though. I tried a lot of different angles, but for some reason the best ones all were from the 90 degree angle.

Today was the first home meet for the Gymdogs, Georgia’s gymnastics team. They’ve won the national title three years straight and are looking to go for a fourth. I was able to get a photo pass for the match even though I wasn’t shooting for anyone in particular.

The last time I shot Gymdogs was last year in early January before I had a decent camera or started taking my first advanced photojournalism class. I’d like to think these came out a lot better than those did.

I know some of these look similar, but whatever. Also, I had a difficult time getting any good shots of the vault so I’m going to try to work on it at the next meet and see if I can get something.

Don’t drink the water

Today I didn’t have anything else to do so I decided to go shoot a swim meet being held on campus between UGA and Tennessee. I’ve never shot a swim meet before so I tried a variety of different things to see what worked and what didn’t.

I played with some settings in my camera and I think it affected the toning on a few of the pictures, so if any look a bit off, its because of that.

Back in October I mentioned that Canon had announced they were going to release two new lenses (New Canon Lenses). Well, on the verge of the PMA Trade Show, Canon has announced they are ready to go on sale.

Cnet has the coverage here.

Gizmodo posted a video about how an optical lens is made. I found it interesting and thought it would be worth reposting here.

You can see it by going here.
