I’ve been trying to get practice with sports I haven’t shot in a while, so today I went out to shoot tennis. The last time I shot tennis was at the NCAA Championship in May of 2007 (here and here).

I think I did better than back then, which I’d hope because I’m much more experienced now. Further, I checked out a 300mm f/4 lens and 1.4x teleconverter from the equipment pool in Grady so by combing those I was able to get a 420mm f/5.6.

Also, I know there are a number of shots below the cut that are similar, but I liked them all so I thought I’d put this up since its just practice anyway.

Tonight was my final UGA basketball game of the season for The Associated Press.  Given that, I wanted to do it right and knock out everything I felt I’d been lacking over the past few months. If only I’d been able to figure it out faster.

First thing I did was be realistic, Georgia didn’t have a chance so I shot Florida for the first half.  It was the right call.  Also, I tried to get some good reaction shots of the coaches and players.

So, hopefully I left a good impression.

Last Saturday I got to shoot a pageant for children with developmental disabilities. The first part of the assignment was to get photos of two participants who were getting ready at one of their homes and the second half was to go to the pageant itself.

I really liked the photos when I first looked at them, but the more I looked the more disappointed I became.

One of the things I definitely need to work on is using a larger depth of field. Some of the photos would have been a lot nicer had more been in focus due to the layering I tried to get. I guess its not such a bad thing that I can see whats wrong with my pictures because it gives me something to work on.

Today was the first baseball game of the collegiate season. Georgia played host to Arizona which is ranked as the number 2 team in the country, at present.

I hadn’t shot baseball in nearly 2 years and the last time I shot it I was using a Konica Minolta Maxxum 5d. Minolta hasn’t been making cameras for longer than that. What was nice about that camera was that I had a 100-300mm lens. It let me get some close ups from that I’m not able to get with the 70-200mm that I use now.

Because of that, I had to think of different places I could go to make interesting pictures and these were what I came up with.

Today I went to Wilson’s Barbershop.  It is in the part of downtown Athens named Hot Corner (the coffee shop was named after it).  Its the historically black area of town and given that I’d never been to a black barbershop before, I decided I wanted to shoot it.

I’m not super-stoked about any of the shots, but here were the better ones that came out.
