At the Southern Short Course this weekend I got to listen to David Hobby, of Strobist.com fame, teach about using strobe flashes to replace the big light kits most photographers use.

Upon arriving home last night I decided to use his DIY approach to lighting and constructed a snoot for my 580 EX II. I found a mini-cereal box that my roommate had placed in our recycling bag and applied black gaffers tape to it.

For those who don’t know what a snoot is, check out the photos after the cut so I can better explain it.

The mini-cereal box now converted into a snoot. Price, virtually free. Money saved from not paying for one, about $23 before shipping.

Trac(k)tion

Shot a track meet down in Gwinnett today for Dawgpost.com, the guys I freelanced high school football and basketball for over the past few months. I’ve shot track once before, but it was a profile about one guy and during a practice (remember assigning that to me Sara?).

I got backlogged because of this weekend and didn’t have time to look up track images to figure out how its normally shot and as a result had to improvise. Here are some of what I got.

This one would be better if here eyes were open, but I’m not sure if its common or not for that to happen on account of all the sand going everywhere.

SSC & SPJ

This weekend between the Southern Short Course photo competition and the Society of Professional Journalists (Region 3) photo contest I won four individual awards and one for a project I oversaw last summer when I was photo editor at The Red & Black*.

Breakdown is as follows, click read more to see the photographs:
