April 2008

This morning I shot an assignment for the Banner-Herald. The story was about how the high gas prices have affected field trips at local schools. They had me shoot some fifth graders who were going to a local nature center, so I tried to work with the situation since I was only really able to shoot briefly since during my shooting time they only got on and off the bus once. Also, I wasn’t about to start shooting while driving on the loop.

Sometimes you go for the graphic shots.

Every year Athens holds a bike race in the downtown area.  Last year I covered it for the Red & Black (see here), but this year after I finished with Gymnastics I went over for some pleasure shooting.

I wanted to try some things with my camera that I hadn’t tried before so I thought about some research I had done earlier in the day about pixel density and low light shooting.  The gist of it was, the Nikon D3 can achieve really high ISO’s without a ridiculous amount of noise because the full frame sensor only has to produce something like 12 megapixels (max ISO is 25,600).  Comparatively, Canon’s full frame 1Ds is about 24 megapixels but can only achieve a maximum ISO of 3200.

Long story short, the bigger the pixels on the sensor, the better they are at handling low light.  That in mind I amped my camera up to 6400 ISO and the image size down to 5.3 megapixels (more than enough for anything I’d be doing with these photos.  So, how did my camera perform at high ISO and half its designed megapixels?  Like a champ.

Update

Hey Everyone,

Sorry for the lack of updates over the past few days.  I’ve been busy shooting the 2008 NCAA Gymnastics Championships and haven’t had much free time.  I’ll post some photos from that when I have a chance, probably tomorrow.

A few minutes ago I hit 20,000 page views since I first started this blog back in March of 2007.  I figured it was enough of a milestone to warrant posting about it.

Today was Earth Day and some student organizations held some activities at Tate to celebrate. I went down there and shot a few things, but I liked this and the bird feeder making the most of all the stuff I got. Bird feeder photos are below the cut.
