Summer Time

Burning down the (club)house

Got a call this afternoon while I was shooting stand-alones for the Banner Herald asking if I could shoot some photos of the club house at Jennings Mill Country Club which had burnt down in the morning.

The damage to the Jennings Mill Country Club clubhouse as seen through this window looking into the building. However, this beer cooler located in the building was mostly unharmed. (You can see it better in the full sized version)

The fire at The Jennings Mill Country Club clubhouse Saturday was extensive, damaging the entire structure.

Faery Fest and the Comer Farmers Market

The other week I shot a “faery festival” (that is how it was spelled). It ran in today’s Madison section of the Banner-Herald. While I was in Comer, I also shot the farmer’s market that was going on next door. Here are my favorite photos from the shoot.

During the human rights festival I shot last week I was also asked to shoot a band that was playing called The Espadrilles. The story ran the other day so I figured I’d link it here. Madison Mays and the Northeast Sales

On Wednesday evening I shot a Little League game between The Northeast Sales and Hawthorne Drugs. The Northeast Sales are trying to raise money to build a field for a former member of their team who died last year after being involved in a car accident with a drunk driver.

The light was beautiful and I had really great access so I felt like I was able to get some really good shots. There are about 11 more photos before the cut.

A bucket of baseballs is one reminder of lost teammate Madison Mays. The team’s coach found the bucket in his basement at the beginning of the season not realizing it had one belong to Mays.

Georgia played the Mississippi State University Bulldogs today in baseball and the Banner-Herald had me cover the game for them. The shoot was frustrating to say the least as I wasn’t able to procure a long lens so I was shooting with my 70-200mm the entire time.

30th Annual Human Rights Festival

Yesterday was the 30th Annual Human Rights Festival in Athens, Ga. I was asked to shoot it for the Banner-Herald. Athens has a lot of festivals, so I wasn’t sure what to expect before I got there. Some of the festivals, like the Twilight Criterium (here and here) are massively huge. Others, like this one turn out to be fairly small.

I tended to focus on the kids because thats where the most activity was. The adult area was fairly empty while the bands played and the speakers spoke. That isn’t to say there was no one there, but they were mostly just standing around.

I think I forgot my notepad at the office, so some of these won’t have full captions until later tonight.

Alvaro Villaveces was pretty difficult to understand, but I’m about 85% certain he said, “this baby is stale.” The other strange thing was that The Athens Right to Life table was actually in the childrens’ area. I heard some parents making some comments about it among themselves, but there wasn’t a confrontation about it or anything.

Mike Copas walks around the festival grounds soliciting donations. Copas was a cofounder of the festival.

The Cheese

This morning I shot an assignment for the Banner-Herald. The story was about how the high gas prices have affected field trips at local schools. They had me shoot some fifth graders who were going to a local nature center, so I tried to work with the situation since I was only really able to shoot briefly since during my shooting time they only got on and off the bus once. Also, I wasn’t about to start shooting while driving on the loop.

Sometimes you go for the graphic shots.

Sometimes you go with the low shot.

But you always, ALWAYS get the safe shot in the event the others don’t work out.
