Anniston Star

There was a story about this tutoring center in Anniston that I shot last week and ran in today’s paper.  The kids were pipe’d in by them so I didn’t want to stage shots so I opted for this portrait with the kids as props basically.

My biggest complaint with the photo is that the lady in the middle put her hand up on the shoulder of the woman in front of her.  I didn’t notice this till it was too late though.  The reason I don’t like it is that with the lens I used, it makes the distance between her and her hand quite unnatural and thus awkward looking.

This also marks my final Anniston Star related post.  I start at The Gwinnett Daily Post on Wednesday.

Edit - Apparently the AP picked up this story for the wire.

Wanda Reid, front, Janice Lee and Alva Willis are responsible for tutoring children at Independent Reading and Counseling Services.

A number of years ago Anniston was deemed the most polluted city in the country because of a local PCB plant called Monsanto that contaminated the surrounding area.  I had wanted to do some type of project relating to this for awhile, but the opportunity did not present itself until what proved to be my final week at the Anniston Star for my internship.

The project was done in conjunction with a story writer Meghan Nichols was working on about how the settlement money from a lawsuit over the pollution has affected the lives of people nearly 5 years after Monsanto (now Solutia) was found guilty.

To go along with her story I took a series of portraits of the people she talked to, here are four of the six I took.  Three of these ran in the paper, but these were the four I had wanted to run.

Vernon Powell and his wife, both Tolbert claimants, received about $20,000 between them from the settlement of the lawsuit against Monsanto. He paid off his house, but owes thousands in medical bills. Powell is shirtless to show scars from several surgeries he says were necessary because of PCBs.

The city of Weaver seems like a bit of an anomaly to me.  They are a small town, but they actually invest in the city’s youth.  The town is now home to a skate park, a bmx track and now a RC track.  Rumor is they want to install a rock climbing wall too.

Anyway, they opened up the RC track this weekend so I went to go shoot it for the paper.

A remote controlled car gets some air off of a jump at the new RC track in Weaver which opened Saturday.

My last weekend shift of course involved another golf tournament, ironically, it was also the final golf tournament of the summer.

Nathan Bennett follows through on his swing Saturday afternoon during the county championship at the Cane Creek Golf Course.

My weekend shifts this summer could be summed up into two things, golf and farmers markets.  I shot each at least 3 times this summer.  I had yet another assignment at the farmers market in Anniston this weekend talking about how there are only 3 left or something.  At least there were chickens this time.

Marguerite Bright’s roosters hang out in a cage during Saturday’s Farmers Market at Zinn park.
