Just found out I won 2nd Place for my photo of Carl Edwards running from his car after an accident on the final lap of the Aarons 499 at Talladega back in April.

Today at Talladega was the big race, the Aarons 499. My vantage point was somewhat boring again, but then as the last lap was coming to a close, the below happened. It happened really fast and I wasn’t sure what had even happened because the car basically bounced into my point-of-view and I just happened to already be pre-focused on that area of the track waiting for cars to be coming from around the corner.

Ain’t no Talladega Nights

I’ve never really watched Nascar, but for some reason I decided to come shoot it this weekend for the paper I interned at over the summer (The Anniston Star).

Today was my first day of shooting, shooting the big race tomorrow as well, buht I think I did alright. I’ve shot one other race before and that was the Petit Le Mans back in fall of 2007.

I was assigned the finish line area of the course which included the first turn of the track. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, there weren’t any accidents on my part of the course (they all happened on the back half). Anyways, photos from today weren’t terribly exciting but they work.

Ricky Bobby was nowhere to be found.

Part 5 of the Best of 2008. Today is portraits, like sportraits but without sports.

Honorable Mention: Ed Butchart is a professional Santa at Stone Mountain Park. He wrote a book titled, â€œThe Red Suit Diaries,â€ and will soon be releasing a sequel. Would have made the list had he been wearing a Santa suit, but he didn’t have one with him.

5) Two ladies who are creating some interactive game called The Jacabee Code. The game will be based on the illustraitons by one of their relatives, as can be seen behind them.

4) Former Demosthenian Literary Society President Rory Weeks.

3) Sgt. Travis Wayne Towler was recently awarded a Purple Heart. Three years ago he sustained injuries as a medic after he began attending to injured friends, unaware he has sustained a head, knee and arm wounds of his own.

2) David Baker of Community Against Pollution poses with a protective mask in the CAP office. Baker trains members of the community to clean up PCBâ€™s and was deeply involved with the law suits.

1) Vernon Powell and his wife, both Tolbert claimants, received about $20,000 between them from the settlement of the lawsuit against Monsanto. He paid off his house, but owes thousands in medical bills. Powell is shirtless to show scars from several surgeries he says were necessary because of PCBs.

This is the second installment of my yearly retrospective of the photos I’ve taken. Yesterday I featured illustrations I’ve shot and today I am featuring pictorials.

A pictorial is a photo that emphasizes graphics. Think shape, color, form, lines, repetition.

Honorable Mention: Taken during a full moon in early June. Photo would have made the cut if I had been able to find something to silhouette in front of the moon.
