Photos of the Year 2008: Sports Features

Numero 6 of my Best of 2008 photo posts.  Today is Sports Features, so non-action photos relating to a sporting event.

Honorable Mention: Tyler Boon plays around with a baseball in The Northeast Sales dugout during Wednesday night’s game against Hawthorne Drugs.  Would have made the cut if the background was a little cleaner.

Photos of the Year 2008: Sportraits

Welcome to the fourth installment of my year in review. This time it is sportraits, or portraits involving sports.

Honorable Mention: Brookwood softball player Julia Westbrook.

Softball Player of the Year – Amberlie Saxton

We’ve been doing some end of year portraits for the various high school sports. Two of them are in today’s paper, here is the second.
Amberlie Saxton plays at Mill Creek High School and was part of the state championship winning team this year.

Mill Creek senior Amberlie Saxton was named softball player of the year.  [...]

Pitcher of the Year – Morgan Bullock

We’ve been doing some end of year portraits for the various high school sports.  Two of them are in today’s paper, here is the first.
Funny side note, it always makes me hesitant when i get to an assignment and one of the first things the person says to me is, “were you the person who [...]

Mill Creek vs Coweta (State Softball Championship)

Here are photos from the second game I shot in Columbus today.  These are from the Mill Creek vs. East Coweta game for the AAAAA championship.

The Mill Creek players hoist up their shiny new AAAAA State Championship tropy.

Buford vs Calhoun (State Softball Championships)

Drove down to Columbus, Ga. this morning to take photos at the Georgia State Softball Championships.  Buford was one of the games I shot.  They played Calhoun for the AA championship and won for the second year in a row.

Paige Hamlin

One of the portraits I had to shoot today was of this softball player, Paige Hamlin, from Wesleyan.  I was trying to think of poses for her and she started tossing the ball up in the air as we talked, and I decided that could actually work.
You can read writer David Friedlander’s story here.

Strobe is [...]

The hunted (Buford Softball)

The description I was given on my photo assignment for this portrait was that the Buford Softball team went into the state softball tournament last year with no expectations and came out winning the state, but this year they are the front runners.  Basically, “the hunters have become the hunted.”

One strobe camera right held by [...]

Julia Westbrook

Shot this in early October.  One of the things I noticed about my softball portraits is that they were basically the same as any baseball portrait I would ever shoot.  I’m not sure why, but I decided to try this.  Julia had really striking eyes and I thought that framing them in her catcher’s mask [...]

Mill Creek vs Peachtree Ridge (Softball)

Final game of softball of the week was Mill Creek vs Peachtree Ridge.

I really like the expression on this one.
