In Back to the Future, Toyota was represented both by Hill Valley’s Statler Toyota and a customized 1986 HiLux 4×4. We decided to bring back both in honor of Back to the Future Day (October 21, 2015), the day Marty and Doc Brown travel to in the future in the second film.
On October 15th, we released our first video for Statler Toyota.
The goal of the videos was to get people to call our custom 1-877 number to receive information about our installations and request a “Statler Toyota” license plate holder. We sold out or initial order of plates in 40 minutes.
Hit 1, 2, 3 or # on the video below to recreate the experience.
On the actual Back to the Future Day we built life-size toy packages for our custom 2016 Tacoma’s in Times Square and at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles. In Dallas we sent the Tacoma around on a flatbed with a sign for Statler Toyota that paid homage to the movie. We also gave toy replicas in matching packaging to people who came out.
I doubled as the photographer for this project so that we’d have images for our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts. Below are images we used through our different properties. I also shot the photos from our LA installation that got used. If only my actual Instagram account could get so many likes.
An event as special as Back to the Future Day deserved a special logo, so I worked with a graphic designer to recreate the Back to the Future logo with Toyota and Tacoma badging.
