A Clean Pair of Socks
Over the course of 2015 I interviewed 50 travelers/hobos in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Atlanta for my A Clean Pair of Socks project. The name comes from a question I asked one of the first travelers I talked to. I asked what one thing would make their day, no questions asked, and they told me “a clean pair of socks.”
The idea for the project first came about in 2011 while I was working at CNN.com. I was in the Little 5 Points neighborhood of Atlanta one day and saw some train kids. I had my medium format film camera and asked if I could take their picture. We ended up talking for a little bit and I realized how interesting their story was. After consulting with the news editor at CNN, I came back and spent the next two days documenting their life panhandling. After years of wondering what happened to that initial group, I decided to flesh the project out in the hope I’d run into them again one day.
