Over the course of 2015 I interviewed 50 traveling hobos in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Atlanta for my documentary project, A Clean Pair of Socks. The name comes from a question I asked one of the first travelers I talked to, "What would make your day? No questions asked." Their response, “A clean pair of socks.”
I first got the idea for the project in 2011 while I was working at CNN.com. I was in the Little 5 Points neighborhood of Atlanta where I ended up talking to a few train kids, and immediately connected with their story. After a chat with my Editor, I returned to spend a few days in their world. The story never ran but a few years later I decided to turn it into a much larger project exploring this mostly invisible and undocumented subculture. You can see the full site here.
